Theorists for Language and Gender - Interruptions Flashcards
Who did a study in 1975?
Zimmerman and West
What did Zimmerman and West’s study look at?
Mixed sex conversations, looking at turn taking and interruptions
What did Zimmerman and West’s study find and conclude?
Men interrupted more
This showed they were more dominant within the conversation and therefore supports the Dominance Model
Who did a study in 1991?
De Francisco
What did De Francisco’s study look at?
Married couples, and who was more dominant within conversations.
Looked at turn taking violations
What did De Francisco’s study find?
Men don’t value what women say and exert their dominance through lack of responses and violating turn takings.
Supports Dominance Model (although different to Z&W)
Who did a study in 1978?
Barbara and Gene Eakins
What did the Eakins’ study look at?
Faculty meetings and if status determined whether someone would get interrupted or not as well as looking at gender
What did the Eakins find in their study?
Showed there was a hierarchal preference as people of a higher status were not interrupted as much
The most interrupted person was a woman
Who did a study in 1981 and 1982?
Beattie
What did Beattie’s 1981 study look at?
Mixed-sex university tutorials
What did Beattie’s 1981 study find?
That status affected whether a person was interrupted or not and gender had no significance
(could support diversity model?)
What did Beattie’s 1982 study look at?
Margaret Thatcher interviews and how she spoke within conversation
(she was Prime Minister at the time)
What did Beattie’s 1982 study find?
Thatcher was interrupted by other more than she interrupted them. BUT she still spoke the longest.
Suggest that interruptions don’t signify dominance
Who did a study in 1998?
West
same West as Z&W
