The working memory model Flashcards
1
Q
Who proposed the working memory model?
A
Baddeley and Hitch (1974)
2
Q
What are the 4 components of the WMM?
A
- central executive
- phonological loop (ACS and PS)
- visuo-spatial sketchpad
- episodic buffer
3
Q
What is the central executive?
A
- decides which of the two slave stores information belongs in
- controls our attention
- has limited capacity
4
Q
What are the two components of the phonological loop?
A
- articulatory control system
- phonological store
5
Q
What is the articulatory control system?
A
- known as the ‘inner voice’
- here words are maintained by subvocal repetition
- rehearses and stores verbal info from the phonological store
6
Q
What is the phonological loop?
A
- known as the ‘inner ear’
- allows you to visualise things
- spatial and/or visual coding
7
Q
What is the episodic buffer?
A
- temporary store that integrates the acoustic, visual and spatial info from other subsystems to form long term episodic memories
- allows info to pass from STM and LTM
8
Q
What is a strength of the WMM?
A
9
Q
What is a weakness of the WMM?
A
