Hypotheses Flashcards
What is meant by an aim?
The stated intentions of the study
What is an example of an aim?
To investigate whether sleeping more means that your memory is better
What is meant by a hypothesis?
The prediction of the difference / relationship between variables
What is meant by an experimental hypothesis?
A prediction that states there will be a significant difference/relationship between variables being tested
What are the 2 types of experimental hypotheses?
- Directional (one-tailed)
- Non-directional (two-tailed)
What is meant by a directional (one-tailed) hypothesis?
States the direction of the difference/relationship between the variables being tested
What is an example of a directional (one-tailed) hypothesis?
People who sleep for eight hours have a higher score on a memory test than those who sleep for five hours
What is meant by a non-directional (two-tailed) hypothesis?
Only states there will be difference/relationship between the variables not the direction of the difference
What is an example of a non-directional (two-tailed) hypothesis?
People who sleep for eight hours perform differently on a memory test than those who sleep for five hours
What is meant by a null hypothesis?
A prediction that states there will be no significant difference/relationship between variables being tested
What is an example of a null hypothesis?
There is no difference between memory test scores of people who sleep for eight hours and those who sleep for five hours
