The Wanderer Flashcards
Oft him ānhaga āre gebīdeð,
Metudes miltse
Always the solitary ones lives to see favour
the mercy of the creator,
þēah þe hē mōdcearig
geond lagulāde longe sceolde
hrēran mid hondum hrīmcealde sǣ,
5wadan wræclāstas
for himself
he sad at heart must stir the frozen sea throughout the sea ways
with his hands for a long time
the path of exile
Wyrd bið ful ārǣd
Fate is completely resolute.
Swā cwæð eardstapa, earfeþa gemyndig,
wrāþra wælsleahta,
So said the wanderer mindful of
afflictions cruel slaughter,
winemǣga hryre:
Oft ic sceolde āna ūhtna gehwylce
mīne ceare cwīþan
the fall of
beloved kinsman always alone I must lament
my sorrow each dawn.
Nis nū cwicra nān
10þe ic him mōdsefan mīnne durre
sweotule āsecgan.
No one is alive now
to whom I dare reveal my
heart openly.
Ic tō sōþe wāt
þæt biþ in eorle indryhten þēaw
þæt hē his ferðlocan fæste binde,
healde his hordcofan, hycge swā hē wille
I know truly
that there is a very noble custom in a noble
man that he should bind
his feelings or whatever he may think
15Ne mæg wērig mōd wyrde wiðstondan, ne se hrēo hyge helpe gefremman;
an exhausted spirit cannot withstand fate
nor can the troubled heart bring about health
