The Vertebral Column Flashcards
How many vertebrae in the cervical spine
C1-C7
How many vertebrae are in the thoracic spine
T1-T12
How many vertebrae in the lumbar spine
L1-L5
How many vertebrae in the sacral spine
S1-S5
How many vertebrae in coccyx
4 fused vertebrae
What is the cervical curve
Anterior convexity, lordosis
What’s the throacic curve
Anterior concavity, kyphosis
What’s the lumbar curve
Anterior convexity, lordosis
What’s the sacral curve
Anterior concavity, kyphosis
Describe the transverse process
Projects laterally from junction of pedicles and lamina, lever for muscles and ligaments, side flex and rotate
Describe the spinous process
Projects dorsally and often inferiorly, lever for muscles which extend the spine
Name 2 types of joint
Intervertébral joints
Zygopophyseal joint, facet joint
Describe the cervical vertebrae
Spinous process, uncovertebral joints (joints of Von Lushka) articuler facets horizontal, side flexion and rotation, C6 disappears on extension
Describe thoracic vertebrae
Facet joints, articuler facet are on vertical plane, T3 in line with spine of scapula, T7 level with inferior angle of scapula
Describe the Lumbar vertebrae
Facet joints on vertical plane
How do you find C2
First prominent spinous process
How to find C6
Disappears on extension
How to find C7
Vertebra prominens
How to find T3
Spine of scapula
How to find L4
Iliac crest
How to find S2
PSIS
What’s the position of the facet joint in the cervical vertebrae
Horizontal, sup facet upwards
Position of facet joints in thoracic spine
Vertical, superior facet backwards
Position of facet joints in lumbar spine
Vertical, superior facet inwards
