Cervical Muscles Flashcards
Some of the main flexors
Sternocleidomastoid, longues capitus, short muscles between atlas occiput
Some of the extensors
Small post vertebral muscles
Some of the lateral flexors
Small sub occipital muscles e.g obliqus capitis inferior and superior
Some of the muscles that do rotation
Sub occipital muscles, sternocleidomastoid, upper traps
Deep extensors (extension of head)
Rectus capitis posterior minor and major
Deep flexors (ipsilateral side flexors)
Obliqus capitis inferior and superior
Muscles that extend the neck
Levator scap, splenius cervicis
Muscles that extend head and neck
Splenius capitus, erector spinae
Origins, insertions, actions of sternocleidomastoid
Origins: sternal head from anterior surface of manubrium, clavicle head from upper surface medial 2/3 of clavicle
Insertions: lat 1/3 superior nuchal line of occipital bone, mastoid process of temporal bone
Action: bilaterally: c spine flexion, unilaterally: ipsilateral side flexion, contralateral rotation, accessory muscle of respiration
Longus capitus and Colli
Only need name and action
Bilateral flexion of c spine, flexion of neck, colli flexes neck, capitus flexes head and neck
Origins, insertions and action of lev scap
Origins: c1-4 tp
Insertions: med border of scap between sup angle and med end of scap
Action: elevation of scap, side flexion, extension of neck
Function: stability of scap, resists depression when holding a weight
Splenius cervicis and capitus
Name and action
Cervicis extends head on neck bilaterally, ipsilateral lat flexion, unilateral rotation
Capitus head and neck extension, retraction
