Define Commonwealth
A group of countries that were colonised bt Britain as part of the British Empire
Define Enterprise Zones
Regions that are set up by the government to encourage businesses to move in. They tend to have lower tax rates or newly constructed offices
Define Ethnic Minority
A group of people who have a different race, traditions, or beliefs from the main population
Define Foreign Direct Investment
When a business or person in one country invests in a business located in a different country
Define globalisation
The process through which countries are becoming more interconnected. This is due to factors such as trade, migration, technology, and culture
Define grants
When a business or organisation is given money by the government e.g research grant
Define Hate Crime
Crime and abuse which is motivated by prejudice against someone due to their race, religion or sexuality
Define immigration
The permanent movement of people to live in a country which is different to their home country
Define migration
The permanent movement of people to live somewhere else within a country
Define multicultural event
An event which celebrates a culture or religion originally form another country
Define Net Migration
The difference between the number of migrants moving into a country and the number of migrants moving out of the country
Define Primary Industry
Industry associated with producing raw materials and crops, for example farmers or miners
Define privatisation
Essential services that are taken over by a private company from the government
Define population characteristics
Factors used to describe people living in an area or community e.g age, ethnicity, gender and employment
Define Population Density
The amount of people per square area of land. It’s a measure of how squashed together or spread out a population
What is rural-urban continuum
An imaginary line that can be drawn from the centre of an urban city to the centre of a rural area, to show the difference in living conditions and population charecteristics
Define secondary industry
The manufacturing industry which turns raw materials into produce goods, for example factory workers or bakers
Define segregation
A group of people who are isolated from the rest of society. This could be because they choose to live separately or they are excluded from socialising with the population
Define shrinking world
The feeling of the world becoming smaller and more easily accessible
Define Tertiary Industry
Jobs relating to services and working with people, for example teacher or waitresses
Define Trade Bloc
A group of countries which join together to promote trade between themselves
Define Trans National Company (TNC)
A company which operates in different countries to where their headquarters are based
