the two process model strengths and weaknesses Flashcards

1
Q

Name one advantage of the two process model?

A

This is empirical support to show how classical conditioning leads to the forming of a phobia
Watson and Rayner’s case study of little Albert used classical conditioning to develop a fear of phobias (unethical)
However, sue et al suggests different phobias may be the result of different processes i.e modelling

Q

Name a second advantage of classical conditioning

A

This explanation can be praised because of its practical application in being able to treat phobias through systematic desensitisation (diminishes the fear response

Q

Name a disadvantage of the two process model

A

it is deterministic/reductionist at a psychological level

  • suggests that phobias are always developed after an individual experiences a traumatic event
  • this is a weakness as this theory suggests that we are programmed by the influence of environmental factors and ignore an individual’s free will and biological factors (diathesis stress model)
