disadvantage of ideal mental health Flashcards
Name one disadvantage of ideal mental health
Johda’s criteria is culture bound
How would you elaborate on your first disadvantage of ideal mental health
it links to cultural relativism/ ethocentrism as Jodha’s criteria is based on western, individualist culture norms. If we were to apply her criteria (such as self-actualisation reaching one’s fullest potential) against a collectivist culture in Africa. We would find high levels of abnormality. This is a disadvantage as it prohibits the usefulness of this approach to specific cultural groups
Name a second disadvantage of ideal mental health
It has unrealistic criteria
How would you elaborate on your second disadvantage of ideal mental health
according to her criteria, many of us would be considered abnormal
Her criteria is also difficult to assess as how easy would it be to assess the capacity of growth or mastery of the environment?
This is a limitation as her approach may be not be useful when identifying abnormality as it does not have any validity such as scientific approval
Name a third disadvantage of ideal mental health
It is subjective to interpretation/information
How would you elaborate on your third disadvantage
the criteria that Johda stipulates are vague and difficult to measure
