The Turn and Slip Indicator Flashcards
The type of gyro?
Horizontal axis rate gyro
In what plane is the gyro free to move?
The roll plane, fore and aft axis.
The angle of bank in a balanced turn can be calculated as being?
10% of TAS (in knots) + 7 degrees
If rotor speed is low?
Lesser rate if turn indicated
If rotor speed is high?
Greater rate of turn indicated
How is the turn and slip indicator driven?
Either by air or electrically
How is the turn co-ordinator driven?
Electrically
When in a right turn and the ball to the right, this is called?
Slipping
When in a right turn and the ball to the left, this is called?
Skidding
The turn indicator use a lower rpm of? And Why?
9 000rpm, since low rpm is necessary to reduce gyro rigidity as the principle operation of the instrument is the measurement of the precessional forces acting on the gyro rotor generated by the aircraft turning.
Spring tension is adjusted for a?
Rate one turn
The three significant differences that sets. the turn co-ordinator aside from the turn indicator?
- The turn co-ordinator always contains an electrically driven gyro, making it a suitable backup instrument to the vacuum driven artificial horizon
- The display features a set of wings representing the view of an aeroplane from behind.
- The turn indicator is only able to sense a turn about the vertical axis of the aircraft, whereas in the turn co-ordinator because the gimbal axis is set up at an angle of 30 degrees to the aircraft’s longitudinal axis it is not only able to sense turn but also roll or bank about the aircraft’s longitudinal axis.
When an aircraft is over-banked it tends to?
Slip
When an aircraft is under-banked it tends to?
Skid
Bank to the right, ball to the left. This is a?
Skidding turn
