The Trunk And Its Muscles Flashcards
What does the abdomen fascia do?
Muscles of the abdominal wall do not go directly from bone to bone but attach into an aponeurosis (fascia) around the abdomen (termed the linea Alba)
What movements are available at the pelvis?
Anterior pelvic rotation Posterior pelvic rotation Right/left lateral flexion Right transverse rotation (clockwise) Left transverse rotation (anti-clockwise)
Function and description of transverse abdominis?
Fibers run horizontally and the main action is stability
Function and description of internal obliques?
Fibers run upwards and medically, aids trunk flexion, lateral trunk flexion and trunk rotation
Also posterior pelvic tilt and lateral pelvic tilt (external obliques are same)
Actions of rectus abdominis?
Trunk flexion,
Posterior pelvic rotation
Lateral flexion
What are the 3 columns of the erector spinae?
Spinalis (most medial)
Iliocostalisis (most lateral)
Longissimus (intermediate)
Actions and description of the erector spinae?
Fibers run vertically and performs actions such as extension of all regions of vertebral column and side flexion
Multifidus actions and description?
Acts as a segment stabiliser and helps with postural adjustment
Superficial fibers can contribute to extension side flexion and rotation
Quadratus lumborum actions?
Acts as a lateral flexor to the same side, involved in maintenance of pelvis when standing one legged
Actions of rectus abdominis?
Trunk flexion,
Posterior pelvic rotation
Lateral flexion
