Name the first long term cause
The Ulster plantation resulted in a number of protestant “planters” coming from Britain and settling in northern Ireland. Numbers will grow overtime and would lead to a protestant and Catholic divide that characterised the troubles.

The Government of Ireland Act 1920 officially separated the north and the south of Ireland into separate states. this furthered divide between the north and the south giving the hardline nationalist a reason to want a united Ireland 
What caused the short term causes
New northern Irish states was sectarian —> discriminated against people based upon their religion. This discrimination took many forms and caused Catholics be very unhappy. 
Name the c first short term cause
Gerrymandering: this was the redrawing of electorial boundaries that so that constituencies were predominantly protestant. This was caused by the voting discrimination.
Name the second short term cause

Unemployment was two times among Catholic vs protestants. Catholics were ignored it when going for some jobs as protestants and protestant businesses were preferred.
