The Middle Ages Flashcards
What was the feudal system
The king was the most powerful person in the middle ages. This position was hereditary. It was passed on from father to the elder son. To help the king run his kingdom, the king gave an area of land called fief to rich people called Nobles and Lords who agreed to supply the king with soldiers and horses for his army. in return the Nobles gave away some land to professional soldiers called Knight who fought for Nobles and this was called the feudal system.
What the castle looked like back then
Early Medieval castles were built from wood on top of a hill called a motte. This gave the castle a good view over the surrounding area making it difficult for enemies to launch attack. At the bottom of the hill there was a courtyard called a Bailey. There was also a moat that went all around the castle.
About knights
Only men who were the son of Nobles could become a knight. It took up to 15 years of training to become one. Knights wore plated armour, helmets and metal gloves called gauntlets.
