What was the civil war

A

The Irish civil war was a conflict that took place in Ireland in 1922-23 between those in favour of and those against the Angelo Irish treaty. The treaty established all but 6 Northern countries in Ireland.

A

The treaty stated that Ireland must stay loyal to Britain. Irish leaders who opposed all terms clashed with the Irish leaders who readily accepted it. These two forces turned upon each other, creating a civil war which lead to more that 1,000 deaths.

A

In the 1900’s Ireland was ruled by Britain. Many Irish people were dissatisfied with the arrangement. In 1918 Sin Féin, led by Eamon de Valera, fought for a united and independent Ireland and won majority of the Irish seats in the British Parliament. The next year sin féin members met in Dublin and declared themselves the parliament of an Irish republic.

This led to the Angelo-Irish war or War of independence( fighting between British and Irish forces). In December of 1921 members of the Dáil Éireann(Irish parliament) and the British government reached and agreement- the angelo-Irish treaty- that ended the fighting.

26 of the 32 counties of Ireland became the Irish Free State. The other 6 was ruled by the UK. The Dáil vote approved the treaty which caused Sinn Féin to split into 2 groups. Pro-treaty( lead by Collins) and Anti-treaty(lead by De Valera).

In April, republican forces took over the Four Courts in Dublin. An attack was ordered on the Four Courts, causing the civil war.

There was difficulty for the republican forces to organise and develope a plan to defeat the pro-treaty’s. There was guerrilla tactics going on.

Consequences

A

Fighting between pro-treaty and anti-treaty still went on for almost a year. After the war, de Valera continued to be active in Irish Politics, forming a party called Fianna Fáil. Enough seats were won to become the government of Ireland.
