the trigeminal nerve Flashcards
what are the 3 main divisions of the trigeminal nerve?
ophthalmic
maxillary
mandibular
what are the modalities of the divisions of the trigeminal nerve?
ophthalmic - motor only
maxillary - motor only
mandibular - motor and sensory
explain the course of the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve
the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve passes through the foramen ovale and divides into anterior and posterior divisions
which division of the mandibular branch of the trigeminal nerve is usually larger?
the posterior division is usually larger than the anterior division
what are the branches of the anterior division of the mandibular branch of the trigeminal nerve?
motor:
masseteric nerve (to masseter)
nerve to lateral pterygoid
2x deep temporal nerves (to temporalis)
sensory:
buccal (to the skin of the cheek and mucous membrane of the mouth)
what are the branches of the posterior division of the mandibular branch of the trigeminal nerve?
sensory:
auriculotemporal (to scalp, auricle, tympanic membrane, TMJ and external auditory meatus)
lingual (to mucous membrane, floor of mouth and anterior two thirds of the tongue)
sensory and motor:
inferior alveolar (sensory to lower teeth and skin)
mylohyoid nerve (to mylohyoid and anterior belly of digastric)
what are the branches of the posterior division of the mandibular branch of the trigeminal nerve?
sensory:
auriculotemporal (to scalp, auricle, tympanic membrane, TMJ and external auditory meatus)
lingual (to mucous membrane, floor of mouth and anterior two thirds of the tongue)
sensory and motor:
inferior alveolar (sensory to lower teeth and skin)
mylohyoid nerve (to mylohyoid and anterior belly of digastric)
how does the mandibular branch of the external carotid artery exit the skull?
through the infra temporal fossa
