The thoracic wall Flashcards
What is the thoracic skeleton composed of?
12 thoracic vertebrae
12 pairs of ribs and costal cartilages
Sternum
What are the names of the throacic vertebrae?
12 named T1-T12
What is the shape of the thoracic vertebrae ?
heart shaped
Where are the facets and what are they for?
Costal Facets on the transverse process for articulation with the tubercles(bony small protrusiony hole things) of the ribs
Superior Costal Facets on the body for articulation(joints) with the head of the ribs(except ribs 11 and 12)
facets are just the dent like places where the ribs and vertebrae connect
What does the vertebral foramen do?
carries the spinal cord and the meningeal layers
What is the name of the first 7 ribs and why?
TRUE RIBS- because they reach the STERNUM via their own costal cartilage
Which ribs are False ribs and why?
8, 9 and 10
-because the reach the sternum via the COSTAL CARTILAGE of the rib above
What is the floating ribs?
11 and 12
-lack an anterior attachment to the sternum
Where does the costal cartilage of the rib attach?
To the sternum
Name the parts of the rib?
Head Neck Tubercle Angle Internal surface Costal groove External surface Costal Cartilage Crest Articular facets Non articular surface
What is the costal margin
?
Where the diaphragm attaches to the chest wall
What are the 3 main parts of the sternum?
Manubrium
Body
Xiphoid
Were does the 1st rib attach to the sternum?
Manuibrium
Where does the 2nd rib attach to the sternum?
the manubriosternal joint
Which ribs attach directly to the body of the sternum?
3-7
