Lateral abdominal wall Flashcards
What are the 3 lateral/ flank muscles?
sheet muscles:
- External oblique
- Internal oblique
- Transverus abdominis
What are these muscles replaced by when you get to the anterior part of the wall
APENEUROSIS-flat tendon sheet
What do the 3 flank muscles do?
- raise intra abdominal pressure
- important for EXPULSIVE exercises like breathing
- asist the trunk in its flexibility
- guard/protect the viscera in the abdominal and pelvic cavities
Where does the external oblique attach to?
from the outer surface of the lower eight ribs
–as it goes along the midline it is replaced by the aponeurosis
Where does the external oblique arise from inferiorly?
- from the anterior part of the crest of the ILIUM
- lower
What does the lower border form?
The inguinal ligament
What is the superficial inguinal ring?
external opening of the inguinal canal
What are the attachments of the inferior oblique?
Lateral attachments:
-continuous line from the Thoracolumbar fascia, anterior 2/3 of the iliac crest, lateral half of the inguinal ligament
Medial attachments:
- Costal cartilages 7-12
- Aponeurosis to the rectus sheath
- through the conjoint tendon to the iliopectineal line
In what direction do the fibres of the transversus abdominis travel in?
Horizontally
What are the attachments of the Transversus abdominis?
Lateral attachements:
- continuous line from lower 6 costal cartilages
- Thoracolumbar fascia
- iliac crest
- Lateral 1/3 of the inguinal ligament
Medial attchements:
- Rectus sheath
- Forms cojoint tendon with internal oblique
Does the transversus abdominus contribute to the movement of the trunk?
No-because its acting like a belt or a corset
What is the cavity of the abdomen and the upper pelvis lined with?
Fascia known as transversalis fascia
