breathing Flashcards
Where do the lungs expand into during inhalation?
pleural cavity
What cause air to be sucked into the trachea ?
the NEGATIVE PRESSURE
What kind of process is quite expiration and why?
PASSIVE-doesnt require muscle contraction
-depends on the ELASTIC RECOIL of the tissue of the lungs ans in the rib cage
What kind of process is deep/forced expiration?
-ACTIVE
What assists the process of deep/forced expiration?
muscles of the abdomen wall that squeeze the abdominal organs against the diaphragm and pull the lower ribs down
What nerve innervates the diaphragm to contract during inhalation?
PHRENIC nerve from the spinal cord segments C3,4 AND 5=thoracic cavity increases
What happens when the volume of the thoracic cavity increases?
intrapleural pressure reduces
What is the diaphragm attached to?
- costal margin
- XIPHOID PROCESS
- ends of the floating ribs 11 and 12
- posteriorly to the lumbar vertebrae
What organs are covered by the diaphragm, pleura and lungs?
High abdominal organs such as the liver-this is possible due to the dome of the diaphragm bulging high inside the rib cage
