Anterior abdominal wall Flashcards
Where do muscles fuse along the 8 pack?
centre line- Linea alba
Outline of the 6 pack-Linea Semilunaris
What is the v line the location of?
Inguinal ligament
What is the scientific name for the 8 pack?
RECTUS ABDOMINIS
What are the attachments of the 8 pack?
one block of 4 on each side of the linea alba and each block has these attachments :
Superior attachments:
- xiphoid process
- costal cartilages 5,6, and 7
Inferior attachments:
- Pubic crest
- Pubic symphosis
What is the benefit of having the 8 blocks of the Rectus abdominis muscle?
allows segmental contraction of the muscle and therefore greater control of the major activity of the muscle
What is the major activity of the rectus abdominis?
Flexion of the trunk
What forms the rectus sheath and what is enclosed by it
Is formed by the aponeuroses of the transversus abdominis and the internal and external oblique muscles. It contains the rectus abdominis and pyramidalis muscles
What is in between the abs?
tendinous intersections
Describe the collagen fibres of the aponeurosis?
the collagen fibres of the 2 layers are at right angles to eachother=gives more strength to the rectus sheath
How does the posterior lower part of the rectus sheath differ to the upper
?
Follows a different structure-the lowest block of the rectus abdominis is not covered in rectus sheath only TRANSVERSALIS FASCIA becuase at this poin klnown as the ARCUATE LINE all the aponeurosis of the flank muscle pass anterior to the rectus abdominis, so the posterior rectus sheath consist only of transversalis fascia
