test for carbohydrates reducing sugars

2cm of sample and 2cm of benedicts solution in a test tube. Heat in a water bath at 85 degrees for 5 minutes. If reducing sugar is present the colour changes from blue solution to brick red presipitate (This happens cos it donates electrons to benedicts solution). Benedicts is blue cos it contians copper sulfate ions when it picks up electrons from the reducing sugar it changes to copper oxide.

What is the non reducing sugar test

this test is for sucrose. Put 2cm of sample into test tube add 5 drops of dilute hydrochloirc acid. Put in water bath at 85 degrees for 2 minute. Now add a pinch of soldium hydrogen carbonate to neutral the acid. Use ph indicator paper to check the solution thtat the ph is neutral.
