the structure and functions of the skeleton Flashcards
what are the functions of the skeleton ?
- support for muscles and vital organs
- protection of vital organs
- movement
- shape and structure
- blood cell production
- storage of minerals
what are articulating bones ?
bones that meet at a joint to allow movement
e.g hips, pelvis , femur
4 types of bones ? and movements they allow ?
flat - nealy no movement
long - gross movement
short - smaller movement
irregular bones - shaped to protect not move
what is the name for the muscle and skeletal system combined ?
musculoskeletal
what are synovial joints ?
also known as freely moveable joints, most common joint in the body e.g knee
types of freely moveable joints ?
ball and socket
hinge joints
what is flexion ?
movement that causes an decrease in the angle of the bone at the joint
what is extension ?
movement that causes an increase in the angle of the bone at the joint
what is abduction ?
movement of a bone or limb away from the midline of the body
what is adduction ?
movement of the bone or limb towards the midline of the body
what is rotation ?
circular movement around a joint (axis)
what is plantar flexion ?
movement at the ankle joint that points the toes and increases the angle at the ankle joint
what is dorsiflexion ?
movement at the ankle joint that flexes the toes and decreases the angle at the ankle joint
