The Stomach Flashcards
1
Q
Stomach - Function
A
- Mixing compartment
- Storage
- Secreting gastric juices (contains mucus, HCl, pepsinogen)
2
Q
Stomach Epithelium
A
- Internal surface layer
- Simple columnar secretory epithelium
- Folded into millions of gastric pits
3
Q
Lamina Propria
A
- Loose connective tissue that lies between the internal surface of the stomach and the muscularis layer
- Rich in capillaries, lymphatic vessels, nerves and gastric glands
4
Q
Muscularis Mucosae
A
- Thin layer of smooth muscle between lamina mucosae and the submucosa in the stomach wall
- Contracts and compressed gastric glands to push contents into the lumen of the stomach
5
Q
Submucosa
A
- Connective tissue and vascular plexus which supplies to the mucosa
6
Q
Muscularis
A
- 3 layers
- oblique = deepest, covers the cardiac region of the stomach
- Circular = middle layer, encircles entire stomach
- Longitudinal = outer layer
7
Q
Serosa
A
- Outer surface is covered in a layer of peritoneum.
- Continuous superiorly
8
Q
Digestion - Mechanical
A
- Bolus of food is swallowed
- Leaves oesophagus and enters stomach lining
- Peristaltic mixing waves mechanically break down the bolus
- Mix with gastric juices (chyme)
- Contractions of muscle move digesting food toward the small intestine
- Gastric emptying
