Congenital Urethral Stenosis

A
  • narrowing of the urethra (more common in men)
  • can be present at birth, but rare.
  • symptoms range from none, to complete urinary retention
  • surgical procedures best and most common treatment
  • Risk factors: trauma, infection, tumours, urethral instrumentation (catheter), surgeries, prostate cancer treatment, brachytherapy

  • Urethra is hurt by force
  • Sharp blow to the perineum
  • Symptoms: swelling, inflammation, infection, pain, cannot pass urine, blood in urine
  • Minor cases treated with a catheter to stop urine touching urethra to allow it to heal
  • Worse cases require an operation

Balanitis

  • Balanitis is when the head of the penis is swollen and sore.
    With balanitis, the head of your penis is usually:

red, swollen, itchy and sore
Other symptoms can include:

pain when peeing
a thick discharge that comes from under your foreskin
bleeding around your foreskin
an unpleasant smell
difficulty pulling back your foreskin – though in young children it’s normal to have a tight foreskin
- Treatment = steroid cream, antifungal cream or antibiotics

  • Phimosis is a condition where the foreskin is too tight to be pulled back over the head of the penis (glans)
  • Phimosis is normal in babies and toddlers, but in older children it may be the result of a skin condition that has caused scarring
  • Can use steroid cream, or have surgery
