1) monopoly on power
2) rule of law
3) properly functioning bureacracy
what makes up a state
- sovereignty
- bureaucracy
- impersonality
what makes up sovereignty
- state has ultimate authority in territory
- supported by policing/courts/military
what makes up bureacracy
- non politicians (those working in bureaucracy), follow and carry out decisions by elected officials
- because states do a lot, need more bureacracies to help
what makes up impersonality
- state IS NOT a certain individual b/c power transitions
- rule of law
what was before modern states
feudalism
what was different about feudalism
- no monopoly of power
- no formal borders
- no public goods
- limited bureacracy
-no impersonality (state was the king)
how did we get to modern state?
conflicts/war -> nationalism & “rally around the flag”
