what do some radical right parties have roots in
fascism (founded by Mussolini 22 // eg. Italy, Nazi, Franco’s Spain)
- state = importance -> represents nation
- individual rights barely protected (limited)
- not democratic, lead by authoritarian strong leader
what does radical right mean
challenge to constitutional order
- democratic instutions embraced, not liberal though
- oppose: political pluralism, constitutionally protecting minorities
what is extreme right
right = there are inequalities that are naturally there extreme = anti - democratic
what are the 3 points of radical right ideology
1) nativism
2) populism
3) authoritarianism
what is nativism
nation = core - community bond over identity (lang, history, traditions, religion, ethnicity) NATIONALISM - congruence b/w nation/state - mono-cultural nation-state
what is nativism in radical right sense
nationalism + xenophobia
- only people of native group should live there
- non - native people/ideas = threat to nation-state
what is native to radical right
subjective: imagined population
excluded: different races, religions, “homosexuals”
what is populism
two groups = PURE PEOPLE vs. CORRUPTED ELITES
- people should have voice heard in politics
- institutions/constitutions can’t hinder will of people -> limits minority rights
what is authoritarianism
authority and strong state is important!
- state : law and order
- ethics : punitive moralism
- strong/charismatic leader and large following
what is the political agenda of radical right
- anti-immigration (cultural/economics threats)
- anti-islam
- welfare chauvinism
(only for natives) - anti-establishment
(oppose political/economic elites) - traditional ethics
(oppose same-sex marriage, drug liberalization) - law/order
(higher sentence, more police, fewer rights for felons)

growing electoral support
- for long time, not in government -> 8 of 200 governmets bw 1980-2011
eg. front national france external support -> netherlands, denmark - —more recently in government: italy, austria, switzerland, hungary, poland, brazil, us india

how do indirectly influence people
issue positions and priorities
-immigration, corruption, crime
how do have indirect influence over other parties
eg. conservative party in UK; Forza Italia in Italy
