Who were the spartacists?
Communists who wanted Germany to be run by the working classes. They wanted power and wealth to be shared equally among the German population.
What did they want?
To overthrow the government using violent methods.
What happened during the revolt?
50,000 workers went on strike in the centre of Berlin and protested in the centre of Berlin
When was the revolt?
January 1919
Who was in charge of the uprising?
Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht.
Who did the Weimar Republic employ to destroy the Spartacists?
The Freikorps
Who were the Freikorps?
Ex-army soldiers who hated the communists.
How did the uprising affect the Weimar Republic?
Many communists and working class Germans developed a hated for the Social Democrats.
What happened to Luxemburg and Liebknecht.
They were arrested and executed.
