How did the Weimar Republic get off the an unstable start?
They signed the TOV without negotiation (diktat) therefore leading to mob violence and protests across Germany
Why were the German people annoyed at the Weimar Republic after signing the TOV?
They did not believe their army had been defeated and therefore saw it as a betrayal (dolschstoss)
What does dolschstoss mean?
stabbed in the back
What was proportional representation?
Each German party was allocated the number of seats in the Reichstag proportional to the votes it received from the public.
Why was proportional representation a weakness?
It resulted in lots of tiny parties,none strong enough to receive a majority of votes and too weak to get its laws passed in the Reichstag.
What was Article 48?
The president did not need the approval of the Reichstag to pass rules using decrees.
Why was Article 48 a weakness?
Rules no longer needed approval from the Reichstag. This is how Hitler rose to power in 1933.
What was a strength of the new constitution?
People can vote so they can choose who they want running the country, leading to them being more satisfied.
