The Skull Flashcards
What is the role of the skull?
Protects the brain and organs of special sense
Provides openings for passage of food and air
Houses teeth for mastication
What is the neurocranium?
The brain case
What bones make up the neurocranium?
-frontal front
-parietal
-occipital
-temporal side of head
-sphenoid
-ethmoid inner wall of eye and nasal cavity
What’s the viscerocranium?
Facial skeleton
What bones make up the viscerocranium?
Mandible- lower jaw
Maxilla- two cheek bones
Palatine- forms the back of the hard pallet
Vomer
Nasal
Inferior nasal concha- increase sa of nose
Lacrimal- inner wall of eye and nasal cavity
Zygomatic- outside protection of your eye
What are the two joints of the skull
Sutures- allow limited movement between the bones only allowing enough for shock absorption
Temporomandibular- joins the mandible and the temporal bone
What is a fossae?
A depression or hollow that contains anatomical structures; brain, nerves, blood vessels, muscles
What are the 7 kinds of fossa you must know
Anterior cranial fossa
Posterior cranial fossa
Middle cranial fossa
Temporal fossa
Infratemporal fossa
Pterygopalatine fossa
What’s a foramina?
Holes that nerves and blood vessels pass through to enter or exit the cranial cavity
Lamboid suture
Parietal bones to occipital bone
Mastoid process
Anchoring site for neck muscles. Located in mastoid region of the temporal bone
Mental foramen
Laterally paved holes in mandible
Squamous suture
Partietal bone to temporal bone
