Chewing And Swallowing Flashcards
Structures involved in chewing
Temporomandibular joint
Maxilla
Mandible
Teeth
Massification
Temporomandibular joint
-synovial modified hinge joint
-articulating surface: head of mandible, mandibular fossa and articular tubercle of the temporal bone
-movements of the TMJ, depression, elevation, protrusion, recursion, lateral deviation
What are the muscles of mastication
Masseter
Medial pterygoid
Temporalis
Lateral pterygoid
Hyoid muscles
Tongue
Buccinator
Salivary glands
Muscles of mastication
Masseter
O-zygomatic arch
I-angle of mandible
A-elevates mandible and closes the mouth
Muscles of mastication
Medial pterygoid
O-spehnoid bone
I-medial side of angle of the mandible
A-elevates mandible and closes the mouth
Muscles of massticaation
Temporalis
O-temporal fossa
I-Coronoid process of mandible
A-elevates and retracts mandible to close the mouth
Muscles of mastication
Lateral pterygoid
O-sphenoid bone
I-tmj and mandibular neck
A-both sides contracting- protrudes the mandible to allow depression of jaw
One side contracting- laterally deviates the mandible
Hyoid muscles
Assist mouth opening
Tongue
Keeps bolus between teeth
Buccinator
Cheek muscle keeps bolus between teeth
Salivary glands
Lubricates the bolus
Opening stroke of mastication
-mandible lowered and moved laterally to working side
-bolus held in place by checks and tongue
-lateral pterygoids- both sides to protrude, then more on balancing side to deviate to working side
Closing stroke of mastication
-mandible elevated, deviates to working side
-massseter, temporalis and medial pterygoid to elevate
-lateral pterygoid on balancing side to continue deviation
Power stroke of mastication
-mandible moved back to midline so lower teeth glide on upper teeth
-lateral pterygoid on working side to move back to midline
3 phases of swallowing (déglutition)
1)oral phase
2)pharyngeal phase
3)oesophageal phase
