The skin and it's appendages: pathophysiology Flashcards
what is a lesion
an area of abnormal tissue
categories of a lesion
depressed
flat
elevated
what is a depressed lesion
when it gives shadow inside the lesion edge
what is a flat lesion
when there is no shadow
what is an elevated lesion
when there is shadow outside the lesion edge
what’s an example of a depressed lesion
an excoriation (a scratch) because the epidermis is removed and the dermis is present
what are the events during wound healing
blood clots
new epithelial cells are made
new collagen fibers are made by fibroblasts
what are the 3 types of skin cancer
basal cell carcinoma
squamous cell carcinoma
melanoma
describe basal cell carcinoma
an erode in the center, where it bleeds and forms crusts, rarely metastasizes
describe squamous cell carcinoma
hard, discolored, raised nodule, can metastasize
describe melanoma
dark color, caused from melanocytes, deadly, metastasizes quickly
what is the ABCD rule and describe
A= asymmetry: not a perfect circle B= border: sides of lesions are indented C= color: not the same throughout D= diameter: larger than a pencil eraser
what are the classifications of a burn, describe
1st° : only epidermis is damaged, redness minor pain
2nd° : epidermis is destroyed, dermis damaged, blisters, swelling, fluid loss, severe
3rd° : epidermis and dermis are destroyed, subcutaneous tissue is damaged, no pain at first
4th° : damage goes down to muscle and bone, fluid loss, infections
what’s a vascular skin disorder, name an ex.
problems with blood circulation, ex. decubitus ulcers
what is are decubitus ulcers
bedsores or pressure ulcers
