The Skeleton and Muscles Flashcards
Name a long bone in the human body.
Femur
State a function of the spongy bone.
Gives strenght to bone without it being too heavy.
State function of medullary cavity.
Medullary cavity reduces weight of the bone so movement is easier.
State a role of cartilage.
Protects the ends of the bones by reducing the friction between them.
Where are the discs in the human backbone?
Between each vertebra
What is the function of the discs in the human backbone?
To allow some movement but to prevent the vertebrae from rubbing off eacht other.
What is the role of yellow bone marrow?
It’s inactive but can convert to red bone marrow if needed.
Fat is stored in the yellow bone marrow.
What is the role of red bone marrow?
Produces red blood cells
Give three roles of the skeleton.
- protection
- movement
- shape
Explain what is ment by the axial skeleton.
Axial skeleton consists of the skull, spine, ribs and sternum.
Give function of tendons.
Join muscles to bone to enable the muscles to move the bone.
Suggest a treatment for a named disorder of the musculosketal system.
Arthritis- treated with Aspirin to reduce swelling, in severe cases replacement of the joint.
Explain what is meant by an antagonistic muscle pair.
A pair of muscles that have opposite effects. They work in pairs to flex and extend bones
e.g. Biceps & triceps
Give function of osteoblasts.
Forms bone cells which produce protein or collagen
Give function of osteoclasts.
Digest bone in medullary cavity and deposits calcium into blood for bone growth
