The skeleton Flashcards
what is the scientific name for the skull?
the cranium
what is the greatest range of movement for the ball and socket
360 degrees rotation
what are examples of a ball and socket
hip and shoulder
what is the hinge
a flexible joint
what does the hinge do
allows movement in two directions, with a limit, two bones connect at a point
what are examples of hinges?
elbows and knees, fingers and toes
what do fixed or fused joints do
allow no movement, the skull is made up of 22 bones which are joined up by fixed joints
what are examples of fixed or fused joints
skull and pelvis
what is the locomotor system
it is responsible for movement; consists of bone and muscle
what are ligaments
connect bone to bone
what are tendons
connect muscle to bone
what are common problems affecting joints?
arthritis, damaged ligaments, dislocation
what is cartilage
it is the connective tissue which protects our joints and bones from rubbing off one another. some cartilage do not have blood vessels or nerve so it can take a long time for it to repair, some of a baby’s bones are made up of cartilage and the grow up the cartilage is slowly replaced with bone
what are joints
where two bones meet, without them our bodies would not be able to run, jump or bend. Joints allow the body to move freely
what are bones
they make up a lot of our skeleton. They are always growing and aging at different rates, we have many bones in our body. Bones are made up of living tissues. The outer tissues is hard and the inner tissues of the bone is soft. bones can store different types of nutrients, our body is born with around 300 bones and as the baby grows into an adult the bones fuse together
