Atomic structure Flashcards
what is matter?
matter describes all the physical substances around us, the unvierse is made up of matter and energy, anything that has a mass takes up space/volume
what are examples of matter?
A brick, a desk, a pencil, air
what is an atom?
the smallest unit of an element
what is in the atom?
it consists of a nucleus surrounded by one or more electron shells
what is in the nucleus?
it is the central part of the atom and it is composed of protons and neutrons
where are electrons found?
on electron shells
Did you know that Atoms are so small that…
It would take a stack of 50,000 aluminium atoms to equal the thickness of a sheet of aluminium foil from your kitchen. A speck of dust contains 3 million atoms
what is matter made up of?
atoms
what are subatomic particles?
these are smaller than atoms and are tiny particles which make up atoms
what is the nucleus?
it is the central part of the atom, it is composed of protons and neutrons, and it contains most of its atomic mass
what is a proton?
A proton is a positively charged particle, it helps make up the nucleus of an atoms, it helps identify the atom, it is equal to the atomic number of the atom, it contributes to the atomic mass and it is equal to the number of electrons
what is a neutron?
A neutron is neutral particles that have no electric charge, it helps make up the nucleus of the atom and it contributes to the atomic mass.
What is an electron?
an electron is negatively charged particles, found outside the nucleus of the atom, it moves so rapidly around the nucleus that it creates an electron cloud, mass is insignificant when compared to protons and neutrons, equal to the number of protons and it is involved in the formation of chemical bonds
