particles Flashcards
describe the process of chromatography
- Firstly get chromotoghraphy paper
- Get a solvent such as ethanol or to get water
- Get a beaker to hold the solvent
- Draw the pencil line
- Put a spot of ink on the pencil line
-Hang the chromotoghraphy paper at the top of the beaker, make sure the pencil line is
just above the solvent level
- It is now done so just wait for the different dyes to start spreading by the water traveling up the chromotoghraphy paper, and it is separating out the dyes
- The final result is called a chromotogram
Why can liquids flow and take the shape of their container?
because the particles can move around each other
why cant liquids be compressed?
because the particles are still close to each other therefore the particles have no space to move into.
why can gasses be compressed?
because there is lots of space for the particles to move into since gas particles are far apart from each other
why can gasses flow and fill their contanier?
by them being quick and moving in different dirrections so they can fill the container and are able to move around each other
why can solids not be compressed?
they cannot be compressed since there is no space for the particles to move into
what particles are very close to eachother
solid
what particles are far away from eachother?
gas particles
what particles are close to each other?
liquid particles
what is a solute?
something that is dissolved in a solvent
what is a solvent?
a solvent is something that dissolves other substances
what makes something soluble?
it has to be able to dissolve in a solvent
what is distilation?
it is separating a liquid from a soluble solid
what is the process called that turns a liquid into a gas?
evapouration
what is the process called from a solid to a liquid?
melting
