Light Flashcards
what does light consist of?
tiny packages of energy called photons
what does light travel in?
straight lines
what is a vaccum?
a vaccum is a volume of empty matter
What is lights speed?
300,000km/s
what does luminous mean?
it means a object that produces its own light
what does nonluminous mean
a object that does not produce its own light
what are examples of luminous objects
the sun, phones, light bulb
what are examples of non luminous objects?
paper, moon
what do luminous objects do
emit
what do non luminous objects do
reflect
what is transparent
allows all light through
what is translucent
allows some light through
what is opaque
allows no light through
what levels are the ocean made of
the sunlight, twilight and midnight zone
how does light behave
like a wave
how do we see something
light rays go on the object and reflect into our eyes
is it possible to track the speed of light
yes scientists have discovered the speed of light
why is the sun a star?
because it produces its own light which makes it luminous
why is the moon non-luminous?
because it doesn’t produce its own light, it reflects the light emitted from the sun
What does transmitting mean/ transmission of light?
when light passes through an object
why is it dark at the bottom of the ocean
it’s dark at the bottom of the ocean because light can’t travel that far down and the water surface reflects some of the light while the remaining photons that do not penetrate the air, water surface begin to scatter, and are eventually absorbed by opaque particles suspended n the water
what colors does the sun consist of
the sun consists of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. the primary colors are red, blue, and green. this law of reflection states that the angle of the incident equals the angle of reflection
what do opaque objects cause
a shadow
what do translucent objects cause
a pale shadow
what do transparent objects prevent
a solid shadow from forming
you can see light when its
reflected
what does light follow
the law of refraction
