The Skeletal System Flashcards
• Vertebrates like humans have what, which is composed of cartilage and bone?
Endoskeleton
• What is Hyaline cartilage?
Literally covers the ends of the joints. Cartilage/Fibrocartilage.
• When speaking of bone tissue, what exactly is Lamellae?
they are the TUBES of the Osseous/Osteons which you can see as these circles, now if you look closely, imagine pulling them out, they would then stretch out like a telescope
• What is most rigid of the connective tissue?
bone tissue/osseous itself
Remember, Cartilage too!!
• What are 3 main features of Skeletal muscle?
has alternating light & dark bands called striations, controlled by voluntary movement, stimulated by nerve stimuli to contact
• So the bones help in doing what else with movement type stuff?
Scaffolding, support and the ability to move around
• The bones also store what? This is crucial to what?
Also store calcium phosphate, and other minerals to keep neurons firing and muscles contracting. This process is called Hematopoiesis
• Hematopoiesis is what kind of production?
Blood cell production
• How is Homeostasis a part of the skeleton system?
by regulating blood calcium levels producing a hormone called Osteocalcin
• What are the appendicular bones?
They pretty much make up everything else, as far as the limbs, shoulder blades, pelvis, they are the bones that help us move around.
• All bones have a similar and internal structure which consists of
Compact bone, spongy bone (the honeycomb looks parts to a bone)
• What are the difference between red bone marrow VS yellow bone marrow?
Red = produces red blood cells and Yellow = stores energy as fat
• What are osteons?
Cylindrical weight baring structures that run parallel to the bones axis – they look like tubes inside of tubes.
