Lab 3 - Immune System - 3 Flashcards
• What are Dendritic Cells?
In tissues contacting environment, stimulate adaptive immunity against pathogens
• What are Eosinophils?
In tissues under epithelium, which defend against multicellular invaders (worms) by discharging enzymes
• What are Natural killer cells?
Circulate body, detect abnormal surface proteins characteristic of some virus-infected/cancerous cells – especially they recognize what a normal cell should look like
• What is one important thing about Natural Killer Cells?
They don’t engulf but only release chemicals
• Within the innate Immunity for Vertebrates, what is the complement system?
inactive proteins in blood plasma; activated by substances on surface pathogens leading to many biochemical reactions causing lysis cells
• What is lysis?
disintegration of a cell wall or cell membrane.
• What is the membrane of a cell?
the entrance/exit of a cell - transportation as well.
• What are the two protective proteins in the immune system that act in a NON-SPECIFIC way?
Interferons and the Complement System.
• Events triggered by injury-infection is called what?
Inflammatory response – like as in a splinter, or a cut
• What are Cytokines?
Signaling molecules recruit neutrophils to site of injury-infection
• What are Mast cells?
Immune cells in connective tissue release signaling molecule histamine
