The Skeletal System. Flashcards
Functions of the skeletal system…
Structural support, protection of internal organs, leverage for movement, storage of calcium and production of blood cells.
4 Types of bone…
Long = longer than wide, lever. Short = equal long-wide, glides. Flat = protect organs, muscle attachment. Irregular = muscle attachment.
What is bone?
Dynamic living connective tissue that is strong and flexible.
Cells found in bone…
Osteoblast = secrete osteoid, form new bone. Osteoclast = remodels bone, removes mineral from matrix. Osteocyte = maintained in matrix.
Bone marrow location and types…
Found in spaces between trabecular spongey bone and medulla cavities.
Red bone marrow = myeloid tissue
Yellow bone marrow = fatty tissue
Another name for bone formation?
Ossification or Osteogenesis.
Another name for a joint?
Articulation.
Types of joint movement…
Synarthrosis (little-no movement) Amphiarthosis (slight movement) and Diarthrosis (free movement).
Types of joints…
Ball and socket, Hinge, Gliding, Pivot, Saddle and Ellipsoid.
