Homeostasis Flashcards
Define Homeostasis.
The tendency towards stability of an internal environment of a healthy organism.
Examples of variables that homeostasis keeps at a set point.
Temperature, Oxygen, Carbon dioxide, Blood glucose, Blood volume and Blood osmolarity.
Examples of negative feedback.
Temperature and Blood pressure regulation
Examples of positive feedback.
Blood clotting and Child Birth.
What does negative feedback do?
Decreases the effect of the original stimulus.
Hypothalamus and Pituitary axis in relation to homeostasis.
Key integrative centres converting synaptic signals to hormonal signals. Control hormone secretion from the pituitary gland. In charge of homeostasis of; body clock, reproductive behaviour, sleep regulation, arousal, thermoregulation and circadian rhythm.
