The Respiratory System. Flashcards
What is the role of the respiratory system?
Supplies oxygen to the body and maintains pH of bodily fluids.
The right lung characteristics…
3 Lobes (superior, middle, inferior) 2 Fissures, wide and short.
The left lung characteristics…
2 Lobes (superior, inferior) 1 Fissure, narrow and long.
Components of the upper respiratory tract?
Nose - Nasal Cavity - Paranasal Sinuses - Pharynx - Larynx
Components of the lower respiratory tract?
Trachea - Bronchi - Bronchioles - Alveoli
Role of the conducting zone?
Filter, warm and moisten air to be transmitted to/from lungs.
Role of the respiratory zone?
Gaseous exchange.
Role of the Nasal Cavity?
Warm, cleanse and humidify inhaled air. Resonating chamber that modifies the voice.
Role of the Pharynx?
Located between the nose and larynx, passageway for food/air/mucus. Resonating chamber for speech.
Role of the Larynx?
9 pieces of cartilage. Maintains an open airway. Swallow/Cough reflexes. Voice box.
What is pulmonary ventilation?
The exchange of air between the atmosphere and alveoli of lungs.
What is pulmonary compliance?
The ease of expansion of healthy lungs, effected by scar tissue, respiratory passage blockage.
What regulates airway diameter?
The contraction/relaxation of smooth muscle in airways.
