Nutrition and Metabolism. Flashcards
Examples of macronutrients.
Water, Carbs, Protein and Fats.
Examples of micronutrients.
Vitamins and Minerals.
What are monosaccharides?
Glucose, Galactose and Fructose.
What are disaccharides?
Sucrose, Lactose and Maltose.
What are polysaccharides?
Starch, Glycogen and Cellulose.
What do we use glucose for?
Converting to energy, forming structural components of other molecules and providing energy stores.
Uses of fibre?
Absorbs water in intestine to soften stools and form bulk.
What do VLDLs do?
Transport triglycerides/cholesterol from liver to adipocytes.
What do LDLs do?
Transport cholesterol from liver to tissues.
What do HDLs do?
Remove cholesterol and return it to the liver for elimination.
Which vitamins are fat soluble and water soluble?
Fat soluble = A D E K
Water soluble = B C
What is anabolism?
Small molecules join to form complex structures - uses energy.
What is catabolism?
Large molecules broken down to form smaller molecules - release energy.
What is a calorie?
The amount of heat required to heat 1 litre of water by 1 degree Celsius.
What is the metabolic rate?
Rate energy is released to from cells.
