The Skeletal and Muscular Body Systems Flashcards
What are the 5 functions of the skeletal system?
- Movement
- Support
- Shape
- Protection
- Blood cell production
Where does movement take place?
All movement takes place at joints.
What is a joint?
A joint is where two or more bones meet.
Name the types of synovial joint.
- Ball and socket - shoulder
- Gliding joint - wrist
- Hinge joint - elbow
- Saddle joint - thumb
- Pivot joint - neck
- Condyloid joint - ankle
Movement at joints are:
Flexion and extension
What do tendons do
Tendons link muscle to bones
What does cartilage do.
Cartilage acts as protection between bones.
Muscular endurance:
Ability of the muscles to work continuously over a period of time
Explosive strength:
Used in one short sharp movement.
Power:
Combination of speed and strength.
Cardiovascular endurance:
Ability of the heart and lungs to continuously supply oxygen over long periods.
Flexibility:
The range of movement around a joint.
Agility:
The ability to change direction quickly - a combination of flexibility and speed.
Balance:
The ability to stay stable and level.
Coordination:
The ability to control the body when performing different actions at the same time.
