The Rotation of the Earth Flashcards
Rotation
The turning movement of an object around its axis
In our solar system, each planet rotates on its own axis
There are eight planets in the solar system. Each planet has an axis. An axis is an imaginary line through the center of something. Planet Earth’s axis goes though the center of the Earth from the North Pole to the South Pole, like the line you can see through the Earth in
Planet Earth also rotates on its own axis.
It rotates from west to east. This is in an anticlockwise direction when viewed from the North Pole.
The rotation of the Earth causes night and day
It takes the Earth 24 hours to rotate once. As the Earth rotates, one side of it faces the Sun and the other side faces away from it. In this time, we experience a day and a night.
