Moons Flashcards

Q
Moons
A
- Moons do not give out their own heat and light
- Like planets, moons do not give out their own heat and light = not made of hot gas
- Only stars are made of hot gas and can give out their own heat and light
- Our Moon can be seen from Earth because the light from the Sun shines onto its surface
- The Moon seems to shine because light from the Sun shines onto its surface and lights it up

Q
On the Moon, we can see craters, light areas which are mountains and darker areas which are flat plains
A
- The Moon’s surface is not flat and smooth. It has mountains, lower-lying flat areas called plains, and craters
- They have a rim of higher land around their edge.
- Scientist think craters were formed by large rocky objects crashing into the surface of the Moon many years ago.
- You can make a crater by dropping a stone into a pile of sand.
- The mountains appear as light areas and the plains as dark areas. The plains are dark because they are covered by dark rock
