Difficulty establishing a casual link (weakness )

P-hard to prove media directly causes addaiction
E-research is correlational, cant say that media causes addiction, other factors eg- friends family etc.
Pechmann and shih (1999)- people who watched smoking films had a more positive attitude towards smoking.
E-media may effect behaviour but bcs its correlation we cant say its the main cause

Lack of population validity (weakness)

A

P-research mostly focuses on tennis so cant be generalised to everyone
E- teens are more easily influence by social factors so resultants may not be the same for adults HOWEVER
Jamieson and romer (2015) similar media effects on smoking behaviour in adults
E- shows media can influence others. But focusing it on teens raises questions about reliability/ validity of study

P-teens aren’t passive when it comes to media influence
E-Atkinson et al- teens knew media portrayals Eg Caleb’s drinking= exaggerated. Friends and parents influenced them more.
E- teens do understand media isn’t always realistic but they may still be unaware of subtle effect on their behaviours

Media can have its positive effects

A

P-media can help reduce addiction
E-Pechmann and shih (1999) anti smoking ad before a film cancelled out the effect of seeing smoking in the movie.
Negative portrays eg coverage of Amy winehouses death might also discourage addiction
Could also talk about Liam Payne battle with alcohol addiction and consequently his dearth (died from intoxication- could be drink and drugs)
E- shows media can helps to reduce addiction by highlighting negative effects.

people who have a high neuroticism have a greater tendency to develop a tic too disorder.
Suggesting that individuals may use tic too as a coping mechanism to alliveiate depressive symptoms leading to excessive use and addiction
