Evaluation-Effectiveness- Aversion Therepy Flashcards
Effectiveness of Antabuse (strength and weakness)
P-been effective in promoting abstinence from alcohol
E-Niederhofer and Staffen- participants using Antabuse had longer periods of abstinence compared to placebo over 90 days
E- Jogensen those treated with Antabuse experienced more days before relapse and fewer overall drinking days
E- Antabuse= effective short term treatment to reduce alcohol consumption.
HOWEVER
Long term studies= limited+ lack in scientific evidence as trails are not full randomised controlled trails - Ellis
-conducting the placebo= challenging bcs participants can easily identify if they are in treatment bcs there’s a lack of adverse effects when consuming alcohol.
E- strength and weakness because lack of long term research but it can help. In short term alcohol addictions
Effectiveness of rapid smoking strength and weakness
P- rapid smoking reduces edge to smoke in short term but long term results are unclear.
E- McRobbie- people who did rapid smoking had edge to smoke in next 24 hrs+ week after but by 4 weeks not much difference between smoking group and control group (who watched the vid of someone smoking)
E- suggests rapid smoking helps reduce cravings early on which may help people quit but its long term effect isn’t clear
Strength bcs short term effectiveness
Weakness bcs unclear long term results
Eliminates the behaviour not the problem (weakness)
P-Behavioural therapies like aversion therapy only treat behaviour not the root cause of addiction
E- aversion therapy makes people associate bad feelings eg nears a with their addiction
HOWEVER doesn’t address deeper reasons eg- cog biases and it could shift to others addictions eg gambling
E-aversion therapy can wok in the short term but doesn’t solve deeper issues, this may require CBT.
Weakness bcs shows aversion therapy doest deal with root cause of addiction
