The Respiratory system Flashcards
What other system is involved in respiratory?
Cardiovascular
The body _______ oxygen and ________ carbon dioxide.
Takes in oxygen
Releases carbon dioxide
What is respiration?
The overall exchange of gases between the atmosphere and the blood
What are the three processes involved in respiration?
Breathing (pulmonary ventilation)
External respiration
Internal respiration
What happens in external respiration?
Exchange of gases between the lungs and the blood.
What happens in internal respiration?
The exchange of gases between the blood and cells of the body.
The respiratory system system is divided into two halves, what are they called?
Upper
Lower
What are the 4 components of the upper respiratory system?
Nose
Mouth
Pharynx
Larynx
What are the 5 components of the lower respiratory system?
Trachea Bronchi Lungs Bronchioles Alveoli
What happens when we breathe in?
Rib cage expands
Diaphragm contracts and lowers
Intercostal muscles contract
Lungs inflate
What is inspiration?
Breathing in
What happens when we breathe out?
Rib cage returns to normal
Diaphragm relaxes and rises
Lungs deflate
What is expiration?
Breathing out
What are the 6 stages of the journey of air to the body?
Breathe in Gaseous exchange in the lungs Oxygen reaches cells Gaseous exchange in the cells Gaseous exchange in the lungs Breathe out
What happens at stage 1 of journey of air to the body?
(Breathe in)
Nose/mouth -> pharynx and larynx -> trachea -> bronchus/bronchioles -> alveoli
What happens at stage 2 of journey of air to the body?
(Gaseous exchange in the lungs)
Capillaries -> oxygenated blood circulated from the lungs to the heart -> pulmonary vein enters left atrium, moves to left ventricle -> circulated to body via aorta, arteries, arterioles, capillaries.
What happens at stage 3 of the journey of air to the the body?
Oxygen reaches the cells
What happens at stage 4 of the journey of air to the body?
(Gaseous exchange -body cells)
Cells receive oxygen and release carbon dioxide into capillaries -> deoxygenated blood travels to the heart (venues, veins, vena cava) -> enters the right atrium, moves to the right ventricle -> circulated to the lungs (pulmonary artery, arterioles, capillaries)
What happens stage 5 of journey of air to the body?
(Gaseous exchange in the lungs)
Alveoli receive carbon dioxide from capillaries and releases oxygen into capillaries -> bronchioles, bronchus -> larynx, pharynx -> nose, mouth.
What happens at stage 6 of the journey of air to the body?
Breathe out
