The Nervous System Flashcards
What other system does the nervous system work with?
Endocrine system
What does the nervous system maintain?
Homeostasis
How does the nervous system communicate messages?
Via neurone/nerves
Name the three key functions of the NS
Sensory
Integrative
Motor
What is the sensory function of the NS?
To gather information and detect changes in the body’s internal environment.
What is the integrative function of the NS?
To analyse and interpret the changes it senses and select the appropriate response
What is the motor function of the NS?
To respond to changes by signalling the required action
How many divisions is the NS devised up into?
2
Why are the two decisions of the NS?
CNS
PNS
What makes up the CNS?
Brain
Spinal cord
What makes up the PNS?
The nerves that lie outside the spinal cord
- afferent (sensory neurones)
Efferent (motor neurones)
Describe the structure of the brain
. Cerebrum
. Cerebellum
. Diencephalon
. Brain stem (which is made up of the medulla oblongata, pons and the midbrain.)
Describe the structure of the spinal cord
.Extends from the rain stem
.Runs through the vertebral canal
.Protected by the vertebrae
How many subdivisions does the PNS have?
2
What is the role of the autonomic subdivision?
Controls involuntary functions, such as smooth muscle contrails. E.g. Digestion
What are the two divisions of the autonomic system called?
Sympathetic branch
Parasympathetic branch
What is the role of the sympathetic branch?
Speed things up, e.g. Increase heart rate
What is the role of the parasympathetic system?
Slow things down, e.g. Reduce heart rate
What is the role of the somatic subdivision?
Controls voluntary functions such as skeletal muscle contraction and movement. E.g. Standing, walking
What are the three different types of nerves?
Afferent
Efferent
Interneurons
What is the role of afferent nerves?
(Sensory neurone) from the body to the CNS
What is the role of efferent nerves?
(Motor neurones) from the CNS to the body
What is the role of Interneurons nerves?
(Relay neurones) communications between sensory and motor nerves and the CNS.
Describe the basic structure of a neuron
. Nucleus . Axon . Dendrite . Myelin sheath . Axon terminal
