The Respiratory System Flashcards
Name organs that are located in the lower respiratory tract
The lower trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, alveoli and the lungs.
Name organs that are located in the upper respiratory tract
The nose, nasal cavities, sinuses, pharynx, larynx and upper trachea.
What is the main function of the respiratory system?
To supply oxygen and remove carbon dioxide from cells.
What is the pharynx
Known as the throat and is a muscular tube
What is a larynx? And where is it located?
Known as the voice box and is located between the pharynx (throat) and the trachea (windpipe)
What does the nose and pharynx have in common?
They are both lined with mucous membrane with allows air to be breathed in, warmed, moistened and filtered.
What on earth is a epiglottis?
It’s a CARTILAGINOUS FLAP- aids in preventing food from entering the trachea (windpipe)
What is a trachea and where is it located?
It’s the windpipe that conducts air to and from the lungs and extends from the larynx to the thoracic cavity where it divides into the left and right bronchi.
What is the upper and lower part of the lungs called?
Appex for upper
And lower is base
The________ (R/L) extends into the lungs and further divide into smaller tubes called _________
Bronchus and bronchioles
The bronchioles are smaller tubes that divide and end in tiny grape like structures. What are they called?
Alveoli.
What surround alveolis? (Grapes)
Capillaries.
What is pleura?
Pleura are membranes which cover the lungs.
Pleura has two layers they are called?
The visceral (inner) and parietal (outer)
What is pulmonary ventilation?
Easy, you should know dis.
PV occurs when air moves in and out of the lungs. 2 phases, inhalation (inspiration) as the rib muscles and the diaphragm contract and oxygen rich air enters the lungs and exhalation (expiration) as the muscles relax and air rich carbon dioxide is moved out of the lungs.
