The Immune System Flashcards
Non specific immunity is divided into three lines, what does the first line of defence involve?
Mechanical Barrie’s such as intact skin and mucous membrane.
Chemical Barriers such as saliva , tears and perspiration.
Reflexes such as coughing. Sneezing vomiting and diarrhoea.
How does the immune system defend our body?
Defence through mechanisms and these are classified as specific and non specific immunity.
What does the second line of defence involve?
Inflammation and fever
Protective proteins that are produced in response to viruses and bacteria
Natural killer cells (lymphocytes) which are released into the blood stream.
Phagocytosis, where certain white blood cells know as phagocytes ingests and destroys pathogens and other foreign substances.
What is the third line of defence
Specific immunity refers to defence mechanisms with very specific action. Both t and b lymphocytes and macrophages play a key role in this line of defence. An antigen is a foreign substance to which lymphocytes respond.
When does naturally acquired active immunity occur?
When the body is exposed to a disease and develops immunity through the action of T cells and B cells in the body.
What is the immunity that is passed from a mother to baby?
Naturally acquired passive immunity.
What is artificially acquired active immunity?
This occurs when a person is vaccinated and develops long term immunity against a disease through the development of anti bodies against the disease.
What does the lymphatic system dooooo
It removed foreign substances and waste products from the blood and lymph. (Icky dead cells, bacteria, viruses and cancer cells). To fight disease and to maintain the balance of fluid in the tissues.
What is the lymphatic system is compromised of
Lymphatic capillaries
““Vessels
““Nodes
What is an autoimmune disorders?
A condition whereby the body produces antibodies against itself. An example of an auto immune disease is rheumatoid arthritis.
Where are lymph nodes found
They are found in the axilla, in the neck and in the groin.
Where is lymphatic tissue found?
Found in the spleen, the tonsils and the thymus. It is in the lymphatic tissue the lymphocytes are formed.
